Canada Day Drumettes


If you are celebrating Canada Day then having red (and white) food is just that much cooler. We wanted to do a chicken appetizer so Sue came up with this crazy mix of BBQ and Asian flavors mixed with a little red food gel for the perfect Canada Day appie. 
FYI - We used drumettes but wings would work just as well. 
These are great for any get together you are having as you can get the chicken in the marinade early in the day and then all you have to do is throw it in the oven when your guests have arrived. Sue cooked these in the oven and finished them on the grill but you can completely cook them in the oven if you want to - just pop them under the broiler for the final 2 - 3 minutes to crisp them up. 
We served them with a bright red sweet & sour dipping sauce for another splash of red coloring - we purchased a store bought sweet & sour to save a little time. 


Canada Day Drumettes

Ingredients
Marinade
1/2 cup BBQ sauce
2 Tbsp black bean sauce
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1/4 cup soy sauce
splash of sriracha 
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 tsp red food gel

2 lbs chicken drumettes (or wings)

Dipping sauce
sweet & sour sauce (Optional)

Directions
In a large ziplock bag, mix together all the marinade ingredients until well combined.
Place the drumettes in the bag and squish it all around to make sure the marinade coats everything. Chill in the fridge for at least 4 hours, up to overnight. 
When ready to cook - Remove chicken from fridge and let sit on counter while you preheat oven to 400. Line a cookie tray with tinfoil and place oven racks on the tinfoil. Take the drumettes out of the marinade and lay them on the wire racks. Discard any extra marinade. 
Cook at 400 for 10 minutes, flip the chicken over, and cook 10 more minutes. 
You can then finish the chicken up on the BBQ for about 5 minutes or under the broiler for about 5 minutes. Either way - keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn!


Serve hot with sweet & sour dipping sauce on the side.


They are really tasty! 
I especially loved them dunked in the dipping sauce....


You can leave the red food gel out if you don't want them to be so red. We just thought the red was perfect for Canada Day (or even Valentine's Day!) - the food gel doesn't affect the taste at all. 
Sue used Guy Fieri's Bourbon Brown Sugar BBQ sauce to develop this recipe but any similar type would work too.

  1. Oh wow, my mouth is watering now... just drooling over this, really appreciate you putting the recipe for us too,, imma give this a try and really think the dipping sauce is mandatory.
